Homemade Eggnog Recipe

- Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until the mixture is pale and creamy. This forms the base of your eggnog.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, heavy cream, and nutmeg. Heat until it’s warm but not boiling, stirring occasionally.

Slowly pour a ladleful of the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from scrambling. Gradually add more warm milk until fully combined.

Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Do not let it boil.

Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and (alcohol, if using)

Transfer the eggnog to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to cool and let the flavors meld.
