Homemade Eggnog Recipe

This homemade eggnog recipe is rich, velvety, and lightly spiced and is the perfect balance of indulgence and tradition. This easy recipe is going to make your holidays a little sweeter and more delicious. Here's how to whip up a batch that will impress your guests—or just treat yourself!

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 large pasteurized egg yolks
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus extra for garnish)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup bourbon, rum, or brandy

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until the mixture is pale and creamy. This forms the base of your eggnog.
    2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, heavy cream, and nutmeg. Heat until it’s warm but not boiling, stirring occasionally.
    3.  Slowly pour a ladleful of the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from scrambling. Gradually add more warm milk until fully combined.

    4. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Do not let it boil.

    5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and (alcohol, if using)

    6. Transfer the eggnog to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to cool and let the flavors meld.

    7.  Pour the eggnog into glasses or into your Big T Tumbler, sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg, and enjoy!
