A History lesson

It's 1971, and Tupperware is about to be introduced into New Zealand.

The Australian Manufacturing Plant is one of only 11 in the world and is now producing 30 million pieces of Tupperware a year.

In nearby Glen Waverley, Anne Baker is hosting a Tupperware party for 12 of her closest friends.

Between them they purchase Giant Tumblers, Party Susans, Carousel Caddies, and they all love the Dip N Serve –

Anne and her friends are great entertainers and they all know the importance of keeping foods fresh. They are all concerned about how expensive life has become.  Bread is no longer 8 cents a loaf but has more than doubled in the last decade to a ridiculous 21 cents.

Petrol costs the eqivalent of 9 cents a litre and the average weekly wage is $95

Gough Whitlam is now prime minister of Australia, and unbeknownst to Anne and her friends,  3 future Olympic stars are born that year in; Kathy Freeman, Kieran Perkins and Steven Bradbury

Australia’s first casino is opened in Hobart and Australia’s first McDonalds store celebrates its first birthday

Australians fall in love with a little country town called Matlock and The Godfather is the favorite movie on the big screen.

Elton John has his first international hit and the word seemingly on everyone’s lips is Watergate

This decade sees the introduction of Shag Carpet, Platform Shoes, Bean Bag chairs, Pet Rocks, Mood Rings, Womens Lib, the home computer, Mini-Bikes, Quadraphonic Stereos, cassette tapes, CB Radios,  Streakers, the birth of Microsoft, the disco craze and Sun tanning lotion that turns you orange.

Channel 0 later to become Channel 10 introduce “steamy TV” to Australians with Number 96

Next month - the 1980s!
